Winter melancholy: light and mood

The darkest season of the year makes many people listless, melancholic and in a bad mood.

The daylight improves mood and strengthens the immune system: light stimulates the production of serotonin, the happiness hormone, and melatonin, which regulates sleep and wakefulness.

Artificial lighting, if it is close to natural light, makes you feel better and the colour of light, expressed in Kelvin degrees (°K), is very important:

  • Stimulating concentration, energising: light colour cool white (CW, 5,000°K-6,500°K);

  • Neutral white light colour (NW, 3,300°K-5,000°K) is an intermediate colour, corresponding to afternoon light;

  • Relaxing and restful effect: warm white light colour (warm white - WW, 2,700°K-3,300°K), found in nature at sunrise and sunset.
